Eva-Maria Westbroek stars in the title role of Zandonai's sensuous drama, opposite Marcello Giordani as Paolo, in this Live in HD presentation. Piero Faggioni's lush production provides the perfect setting for one of the all-time great tales of tragic passion, adapted from an episode in Dante's Inferno. Mark Delavan co-stars as Giovanni, the husband and brother of the star-crossed lovers, whose jealousy leads him to kill them both. Robert Brubaker is Malatestino and Marco Armiliato conducts.
This opera belongs to the 'sex, strife, and sadism' school of verismo, like Sly or La Cena delle Beffe. The music keeps a constant, demanding tension, whether in the violent scenes or in the growing passion between the lovers, expressed in harsh discords, or sudden powerful surges of melody.
Full Synopsis- After Korngold's opera DAS WUNDER DER HELIANE, Opernwelt magazine's 'Rediscovery of the Year 2018', Christof Loy has now taken on another rarity of the early 20th century: FRANCESCA DA RIMINI. In the paid subscription programme of our cooperation partner takt1.com, the celebrated new production is still available for viewing.
- Riccardo Zandonai's Francesca da Rimini is the composer's most famous opera, but it hasn't been staged in Paris since its first performances nearly a century ago. For anyone unaware of what to expect from what is a relatively little-known opera, The Paris Opera promised a revival that would at least make a strong impression.
